Grid Interdependence After the Baltic Disconnection
Synchronisation was a political act before it was an engineering one. What the Baltic switch reveals about the next decade of European grid alignment.
When the Baltic states left the BRELL ring and synchronised with the continental European grid, the engineering community described a frequency change. The more important change was doctrinal: interconnection is now understood, openly, as an instrument of alignment. Wires follow alliances.
The consequence is a Europe where energy price formation fragments by corridor rather than by country. Two industrial sites in the same jurisdiction can face structurally different power economics depending on which interconnectors, balancing markets and storage pools stand behind them.
This reorders the value of physical assets. Batteries, synchronous condensers and demand-response capacity positioned at the seams of the system, where alignment is newest and redundancy thinnest, earn returns that look less like utility yields and more like strategic rents.
