The Taiwan Strait Production Premium

The Taiwan Strait Production Premium

Advanced-node concentration has turned one waterway into the largest unpriced exposure in global equities. We quantify the premium and map who actually carries it.

Every serious diversification programme announced since 2022 has targeted volume. Mature-node capacity in the United States, Europe and Japan is real and growing. The leading edge is a different story: the processes that matter for frontier AI accelerators remain concentrated within a single hundred-kilometre corridor, and the packaging steps behind them are more concentrated still.

That gap between announced resilience and actual resilience is what we call the production premium. It does not appear in equity valuations, because equity markets price the base case. It appears instead in the corners of the system that price tails for a living: war-risk insurance, charter rates for specialised carriers, and the option structures of firms whose engineers have run the same scenarios we have.

The premium is not static. Advanced packaging capacity is being added outside the corridor, but on timelines measured in half-decades, and qualification cycles push effective redundancy further out. Boards treating 2027 diversification milestones as risk retirement dates are reading construction schedules, not capability schedules.

For allocators, the actionable question is not whether the strait remains open. It is which balance sheets quietly carry the premium, which have hedged it through inventory and second sourcing, and which are selling resilience they have not yet built. The full analysis names them.

Key judgements

  1. 01Concentration risk is migrating from fabrication to advanced packaging, where redundancy is years behind.
  2. 02Announced diversification capex covers volume, not the leading edge. The strategic exposure is unchanged.
  3. 03Insurance and logistics markets are already pricing scenarios that equity markets are not.
